Along Interstate 70 in Columbus, Ohio a torrential rain started and a few moments later traffic stopped. I snapped this photo through the windshield as I passed the accident sight after waiting for an hour in the jamup. This and many other photos of my journeys through the midwest are on the photo gallery page just click the photo link to go there. My photos are an important part of the story in the search for what makes the Heartland a unique part of our nation.

Welcome to theBlueHighwayman.com

This is a running account of my experiences while traveling through the Heartland for the past year and a half. In that time I've had hundreds of conversations, worked on political campaigns, challenged CONservative talkshow hosts and found that yes Kentucky is very Red while Ohio is a pale Pink. I drive into neighborhoods and hang out in local bars planting blue seeds of progressive thinking hopefully changing minds along the way. I like reading the local papers hence the list of newspapers on the right which you might checkout, the editorial pages are especially interesting for an insight into local politics.

What is it I'm hoping to accomplish with this website? Well, it's to catalog the sum total of the mosaic I've found in the Heartland. The discovery of what makes the people there what they are and why this critical area votes the way it does. People tend to speak freely to me saying things I'm sure no pollster or reporter ever hears. As a consequence recording conversations tends to distill things a bit so I'm constantly weighing the advantages and disadvantages of keeping hard copies of these encounters. Women are especially suspicious of strange truck drivers taking photos and inquiring about their take on important issues of the day.

For the most part people whether they be Republican or Democrat have been most helpful. Although Democrats tend to be more fun I think it's mostly my appearence that wrankles Republicans. It's that New York Liberal thing burned into some minds. Still it's very rare for me to be confrontational as I'm here to listen and learn.

In the Media section there will be Podcasts and videos of some of my more harrowing driving experiences, (the midwest has some the most intense weather in the country). Also in this section I will comment on some of my daily calls to talkshows and a review of some of the more popular CONservative talkshow hosts. There is also going to be a list of phone numbers and helpful hints on getting under your favorite CONservative's skin ala Rush Limbaugh.

If you are getting the impression this site has a liberal point of view that would be correct. As a matter of fact this might be called my personal 'crusade' to assure the defeat of that extreme rightwing fanatical group the 'Republican Party'.
